Summary

One of the great fears many of us face is that despite all our effort and striving, we will discover at the end that we have wasted our life。 In A Guide to the Good Life, William B。 Irvine plumbs the wisdom of Stoic philosophy, one of the most popular and successful schools of thought in ancient Rome, and shows how its insight and advice are still remarkably applicable to modern lives。
In A Guide to the Good Life, Irvine offers a refreshing presentation of Stoicism, showing how this ancient philosophy can still direct us toward a better life。 Using the psychological insights and the practical techniques of the Stoics, Irvine offers a roadmap for anyone seeking to avoid the feelings of chronic dissatisfaction that plague so many of us。 Irvine looks at various Stoic techniques for attaining tranquility and shows how to put these techniques to work in our own life。 As he does so, he describes his own experiences practicing Stoicism and offers valuable first-hand advice for anyone wishing to live better by following in the footsteps of these ancient philosophers。 Readers learn how to minimize worry, how to let go of the past and focus our efforts on the things we can control, and how to deal with insults, grief, old age, and the distracting temptations of fame and fortune。 We learn from Marcus Aurelius the importance of prizing only things of true value, and from Epictetus we learn how to be more content with what we have。
Finally, A Guide to the Good Life shows readers how to become thoughtful observers of their own life。 If we watch ourselves as we go about our daily business and later reflect on what we saw, we can better identify the sources of distress and eventually avoid that pain in our life。 By doing this, the Stoics thought, we can hope to attain a truly joyful life。

An excellent introduction to stoic philosophy and a handbook to stoic philosophy as a philosophy of life。 Irvine teaches you how to apply these ancient teachings to live a happier life。 If stoicism appeals to you, read this and try to seriously implement its teachings。

A lot of information about how to practice Stoicism but more importantly a lot of information you can put into practice daily to diminish your anxiety, fear, anger, and guilt。 How to be content and happy with your life as you are living it even as you are working to improve it or the life of those around you。 Very recommended and I will certainly be giving it a second reading at a later time。 Right along side reading Epictetus’s “Enchiridion” and Marcus Aurelius’s “Meditations”。

An excellent introduction into Stoic philosophies and how to live in a Stoic fashion in the modern world。 It breaks down the history of Stoicism, interprets Stoic philosophy for laypeople, and gives guidance on how to live using a Stoic philosophy。 At the end, there is a reading list for those who want to learn more。

Wanting to branch out to actually read the Stoics (currently moving through Meditations), I also wanted to read others' take on modern applications to Stoicism and this one was a straightforward, approachable way to both understand the history of the Stoic philosophy of life (and those that lived and taught it) and then the applications under broad headings of the guideposts to use。 It was useful and practical with the pinches of history and historical figures。 The ease of reading without being Wanting to branch out to actually read the Stoics (currently moving through Meditations), I also wanted to read others' take on modern applications to Stoicism and this one was a straightforward, approachable way to both understand the history of the Stoic philosophy of life (and those that lived and taught it) and then the applications under broad headings of the guideposts to use。 It was useful and practical with the pinches of history and historical figures。 The ease of reading without being too intellectual was appreciated。 As was the organizational approach。 Plus, who wouldn't pick up a book off the shelf to help be guided on a good life。 "But no matter how hard we try to prevent bad things from happening to us, some will happen anyway。 Seneca therefore points to a second reason for contemplating the bad things [negative visualization] can happen to use。 If we think about these things, we will lessen their impact on us when, despite our efforts at prevention, they happen。""Suppose we admit that the Stoics were right: We should ignore what other people think of us。 For most people, this will be difficult advice to follow。 Most of us, after all, are obsessed with other people's opinions of us: We work hard, first to win the admiration of other people and then to avoid losing it。 One way to overcome this obsession, the Stoics think, is to realize that in order to win the admiration of other people, we will have to adopt their values。 More precisely, we will have to live a life that is successful according to their notion of success。 Consequently, before we try to win the admiration of these other people, we should stop to ask whether their notion of success is compatible with ours。 More important, we should stop to ask whether these people, by pursuing whatever it is they value, are gaining the tranquility we seek。 If they aren't, we should be more than willing to forgo their admiration。" 。。。more

It seems like Irvine wants to spout his right-wing libertarian viewpoints with a veneer of philosophy。 He also does this when he repeatedly pushes for abstinence, claims that “most modern individuals” have access to enough to eat these days (the empirical falseness of this globally undermines his argument that it is no longer biologically necessary to seek status), and rails against people who “march in the streets or write to our congressmen rather than read Seneca or Epictetus” (this seems to conflict with his advice to focus on the things we can control, and to be fatalistic only about the past and present but not the future)。 It wasn’t that surprising, then, to see him state at the end of the book that a fellow academic had called his political writings misguided。 The writing does come across as illogical and out of touch with reality for all but the 1% (which perhaps is his intended audience)。 For me, Mr。 Irvine’s white male privilege taints the book almost similar to how William Shirer’s anti-homosexuality taints his otherwise excellent book The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich。 Ultimately, the book succeeded in piquing my interest in Stoicism and for that I am thankful。 。。。more

。William IrvineA Guide To The Good LifeTranslated By #Maher_Razouk 。。。more

Wanted to read this book for quite some time, the concept of stoicism always fascinated me and I wanted to learn more about it and maybe become a stoic myself, so let me start by saying the author tells us about the 4 main principles of stoicism which seemed logical, but I believe they are quite subjective as each principle might not work for everyone, but none the less the principles seemed helpful and I surely would want to try and incorporate them in my daily life。 The second half of the book Wanted to read this book for quite some time, the concept of stoicism always fascinated me and I wanted to learn more about it and maybe become a stoic myself, so let me start by saying the author tells us about the 4 main principles of stoicism which seemed logical, but I believe they are quite subjective as each principle might not work for everyone, but none the less the principles seemed helpful and I surely would want to try and incorporate them in my daily life。 The second half of the book contains views and opinions of various ancient philosophers on various topics like - anger, grief, fame, etc。 to name a few and they were some good points but I found that part of the book was a bit boring for my taste, Overall the book does offer some helpful advice and solutions for day to day modern problems and would recommend it to anyone who would like to explore the concept of stoicism。 。。。more
